Subject: Flat Out Fun

Exodus 23:5 If you see the donkey (car,truck) of one who hates you lying [helpless] under his load,(dead or with a flat) you shall refrain from leaving the man to cope with it alone; you shall help him to release the animal.(fix it and get down the road)

Flat Out Fun : After spending a few hours in a public facility, I returned to find a flat on my truck. Ram pickups are big trucks. That wheel looked imposing. My casual business dress felt restricting. Really glad I did not put on that white shirt this morning.

Immediately I set to work. Rain was coming. Lightening was threatening. Finally I figured all the needs out, dropped the spare, jacked the truck, changed the tire, put everything back and climbed in to drive home. The rain spit on me as I replaced the jack under the seat. Whew! I laughed and thanked God for muscles for the moment.

All the while, people were coming to their cars, beeping to unlock, and driving past me on the ground under the truck, by the wheel, lifting the big ol tire, and doing the deed. Where was that great security crew I saw driving around all this time? No one asked to help or even offered an encouraging word. Many passed and looked the other way.

There must be a way to make time for others. I’m sure every person felt I had the situation under control. Between me and Jesus, we did.

I laughed and had a good time and thanked God the rain held off and I was able to do what needed done. Honestly, it was fun.

Quizzical

That verse in Exodus used to be common practice in our nation. I grew up picking up hitchhikers and changing tires on the side of the road for others. In our age of cell phones and hurry-up, we seem to have lost time for others. I am just as guilty as any. The moral center of our nation is skewed a different direction. I don't have a solution, but I certainly see the issue. Somehow, we need to get back to some easy to understand scriptural guidelines of civil responsibility and common neighborliness. What an opportunity for the Christians in our nation to show the effect of reading that book with effective behaviors.

Prayer:

Father, we could sure use some help in our courage and consideration of others. What has entered our cultural soul that enables us to walk by friend and fellow citizen and not offer our time and selves? What has happened to so busy us that we leave others to fend for themselves. Father, we need your intervention. Our view has been skewed. Our understanding has been shifted to self and hurry. Father, I am guilty. I have passed others on the road and not offered help. Cure our hearts. Bring us to a simple living of simple scriptural principles.

Contented Days for Friend.

"Character, kindness, and thoughtfulness toward other people, and an unselfish attitude of service to others are the qualities which make a man." in the book Dear Jay, Love Dad.

Matthew 6:34 So do not worry or be anxious about tomorrow or the next decision or the next moment, for tomorrow and the next moment will have worries and anxieties of their own. Sufficient for each day and moment is its own trouble.

An element of success is the ability to be in the moment, focused on the moment, and not overly concerned about what cannot be controlled. Giving our best to the moment and decision and day brings good results over time and great results in our character.

Father, let Friend see success in the moments.

Let me see success in my moments.

Allow Friend to find contentment in giving the best to the decisions and days met this week.

Open a window of refreshing enjoyment of the journey this week for us.

Bless and do not hold back, Father.

You are good to all and Your tender, loving kindness covers all Your works.

Bearing Up In Hard Times

I Corinthians 13...Love bears up under anything and everything that comes, is ever ready to believe the best of every person, its hopes are fadeless under all circumstances, and it endures everything [without weakening]. Love never fails [never fades out or becomes obsolete or comes to an end]

Love is easy to understand and hard to keep at times. Love means having the best concern for the other person. Simple to feel. Tough to walk out.

Times test love. Attacks test love. Long days and nights test love. Misunderstandings test love.

As a leader, love is important. It guides the big decisions and keeps you going when results take long.

I pray for love to find you.

May the love the Greatest Father come up under your tiredness and carry you through the day.

May the love of family and friend encourage you to keep hoping against hope.

May the love of what you do believe in others to come alongside in the journey.

May love find you, keep you, encourage you, and never fail you.

Making a Difference For Youth, Friend.

Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: (feebly stumble and fall exhausted,

Youth, teenagers, jovenes.... all the same. This generation is looking for fathers and encouragers.

= On FB recently I ran some test prompts centering on lack of hope. Only teens responded.

= Of course teens have emo moments online.. they are teens.

= What happens when it goes beyond? Do they "utterly fall"?

Isaiah looked at his times and looked at the youth and pointed out a potential for failure. He did not do that to simply point out a problem. He did it to point us to take action.

On my current reading time is a book featuring the fathering of Bud Wilkinson. Legendary Coach, television personality, politician, businessman, and father. Dear Jay, Love Dad. Is a book written in love by his son, Jay. It is based on letters (the emails of his day) of encouragement and counsel to a son growing through his youth. His letters from the sixties are teaching me even today.

As you go through 2012, think about ways you can hold up a young man or a young woman. Make a difference.

Prayer: Father, many have been in my life to hold me up. When I would stumble, a pastor held me up. When I would fall, a friend businessman would hold me up. When I would trip, a concerned older man would hold me up. So many times, I remember. Can You hold me up that I might hold others? Show me someone that needs holding up and moving forward. Help me to make sure a young woman or a young man might be held up. In giving, I am given strength and life.

HeartLine, Oklahoma’s Community Crisis Connection, needs community volunteers to help address youth suicide rates in Oklahoma. You can make a difference by becoming a volunteer presenter for HeartLine’s Youth Suicide Prevention Initiative, the Healthy Education for Life Program (HELP)! A Prayer of Ascents

Oh, Lord. I have strayed too often from these thoughts of trust and prayer and reliance on Your love and energy and power. I have trusted in my hand and not Yours. Why do I do this? Why do I get the wrong meanings twisted and contorted? Is there not a God in heaven to show me the next step?

Have I found too much at my own hand? I have not seen the greatness that I have desired. Yet, I have seen much greater than imagined in lives and hope and changed outlook.

There is You.

There is You.

There is You.

You guide my heart and hands and words and writings.

You guide me to bless and encourage others into a new and living way beyond their expectation.

How can I not now see the hand of provision of all that is needed over all I do and endeavor?

This year, You have been great to me.

Continue Lord.

That is my expectation and preparation of my heart. I look only to see You greater than all.

The last few days created joy in many hearts. None of the joy was easy. All of the joy was easy.

Just arrived back from a five day trip to Matamoros to extend gifts and hope from many churches in Oklahoma City to children, families, men, and moms. For five days we were in rain and fog. Most of our outreach was outside at night. Go figure we would find a cold and rainy weekend in Mexico, when the weather should have been beautiful.

People came in the mud and rain. By the hundreds they came in their neighborhoods, at the medical clinic, at the church. They came to hear of hope and receive a gift for a child.

The smiles say as much as words. Sonrisa is smile in Spanish. What a beautiful word for smile. It is a Son Rise. It is the love of Jesus rising from deep. No, the Spanish word has no root in either the English son or rise. But, how like God to create such a word that communicates in two languages even as the smile on the face has no boundaries of culture or language or place.

Las sonrisas dicen tanto como palabras. El Sonrisa es smile en inglés. Qué palabra tan hermosa para smile. Esto es una Subida de Hijo. Esto es el amor de Jesús que se eleva de profundamente. No, la palabra española no tiene ninguna raíz en el Son inglés o en rise. Pero, como como Dios para crear tal palabra que se comunica en dos lenguas justo cuando la sonrisa en la cara no tenga ningunos límites de cultura o lengua o lugar.

A friend reminded me that green grass may be the byproduct of a broken sewer line. Another reminded me to stir the call.

What does that mean? Stir the call?

Paul admonished Timothy to remind himself of whose he was. He encouraged power and love and a sound mind to activate results and dispel fear.

Luke reminds us that it is a power of the Holy Spirit that engages us into effectiveness.

John encourages us that perfect love casts out fear, puts it in the street and out of the house.

Stir the call.

Sunday, I spoke at Fairview on the passion of Eleazar. This warrior entered Pas Dammim with a sure call. Pas Dammim is the boundary of blood. This section of land was contested over and over between the Philistines and Israelis. No one ever won. Just lots of blood at the boundary.

Eleazar fought until everyone else had fled. Alone he stood with his call and his confidence. No friend stood with him. No enemy withstood him.

Calls can be lonely sounding. They resonate in the soul and push us into action. They enable and motivate. And mostly start out alone.

Of course all Eleazer's friends showed up for the victory feast. Each took a piece of his conquest home as a prize for watching. Eleazer took home his pride and his resoluteness and a smile from his Father. That's all a call needs for reward.

Prayer: Father, You are the Author of the call. Give us courage to engage what You call into being. Give us tenacity to take the life offered and offer to others.

Receiving the moments of You in prayer.

Reasons to Receive and Reasons to Reject

Each of us finds reasons to receive a moment and reasons to reject a moment during holiday seasons. This morning I read through a letter from the speaker of the house in Alabama thanking me for prayer. A thank you is a reason to receive with rejoicing. Yesterday, my car's heater sprung a leak. It is 15 degrees outside. That is certainly a reason to reject at 150 miles from home. However, the moment had to be received to be handled. A quick trip to Wally world for some miracle fluid to get me home and a quick call to my faithful mechanic and the car is in the shop and will be ready tomorrow. It had to be received to get to rejoicing. Glad there is a repair fund with a few bucks set aside.

Predecessors

Now the car heater had been preceded by a water heater at the house and the batteries dying in my bionic ears during some critical discussions and my phone / belt-hanging computer cutting in and out and, and, and..... Each moment has to be received, handled and can end up in rejoicing. Now the letter was preceded by a great discussion with a business analyst in New York and a new client coming on board and good days strategizing with two business teams. All of those are easy to receive and rejoice.

The Moment

Every moment presents the opportunity to receive and eventually rejoice. Some are much tougher than others. But, we make it through when we persist. In Dicken's Christmas Carol, the ghost of Christmas present says, "Know me better, man." In other words, enjoy what you have. Receive it, get it into it, and take all the enjoyment you can out of it.

Prayer:

Father, let You have some great moments this week. Whether they start good or bad or interruptive or encouraging, let them result in rejoicing. Enable You to receive and engage with each moment with a certainty You are on our side. As the press of all that needs done needs done looms and days shorten in reach, put a deep smile of confident expectation of good wrap around the heart of You. Give peace for the journey with strength for the moment, and I will be faithful to remember You in each of them.

Enjoy the present moment.

God clothes the grass in the field, which is alive today but tomorrow is thrown into the fire. So you can be even more sure that God will clothe you. Don't have so little faith!

There is certainly room for improvement in our world behavior these days. Always has been. Always will be as long as humans are in charge. It is a fountain of life to realize our God is able to tend to our needs.

In this present moment I pray you find:

Lasting hope to replace any disenchantment

Enduring love to replace sometimes disappointment

Empowering faith to replace wandering discouragement

Exceeding joy to replace temporary disillusionment

Isaiah 44:23 Skies, sing for joy because the Lord did great things! Earth, shout for joy, even in your deepest parts! Sing, you mountains, with thanks to God. Sing, too, you trees in the forest!

As you navigate through this week of family gatherings, work luncheons, services, and community gatherings I pray you remember why our nation declares this week.

Thanksgiving has become a national time of taking time away from the daily grind and the mundane.

Has it become a time of real reflection on that for which we are thankful?

Has it become a time of centering decisions and actions on a life of being thankful?

May your many blessings consume your thoughts this week.

May your many accomplishments in life come to mind and stir your confidence.

May God's hand that has brought you thus far be on you in real and tangible ways.

May the grace that has brought you thus far be extended another season.

May you sing and shout and sing and sing so that any and all my see and say, "What a good thing, God has done."

Drugs, lotteries, and prayer

Miracles of drugs, chance, and prayer do little good in reversing deliberate patterns of destructive lifestyle.

They may jumpstart the process, but seven more deadly demons will disrupt and dilute any lasting results should we not transform our thoughts and behavior to a new and living pattern.

Prayer can change our patterns of thought and behavior and miraculously interrupt to take down the strong man should he be too strong for discipline.

At times the strong mountain must be crushed in God's intervention so we may see with hope and faith. At that moment we must rush with diligence to be transformed and cover ourselves in study and prayer.

Dissing Dragons

But the dragon was not strong enough, and he and his messengers lost their place in heaven. Revelation 12:8

“Precisely the least, the softest, lightest, a lizard's rustling, a breath, a flash, a moment - a little makes the way of the best happiness.” Friedrich Nietzsche

Whether dragon or lizard is a matter of perception. A dragon is a large lizard with bad breath. A lizard is a small dragon with whimsical appeal.

Every issue in life can appear as a dragon. Every issue in life can appear as a lizard. The size and impact is in perception and reception.

Unless of course the dragon is really a dragon. Then you cannot perceive him into a lizard. He must be faced, fought, and conquered or caged.

Some seasons the lizards slip from every crack and crook. They are amazing, light creatures and a delight to watch. Many come with colors and shapes that are simply delightful. As Nietzsche points out, it takes but simple littles to make us smile. They never stay for more than a flash.

Some seasons the dragons crash through from every open path. It seems there is no journey safe. Yet, really, most of them are lizards with a big shadow. When faced, they shrink to normal delightful size and rustle away giving comic relief to a frightful first pounce. In retreat, they will remove all enchantment from life.

In reality, some dragons are dragons. Afflictions of the soul that roar from within are the toughest to tie down. Their firey breath breaks our courage into small and ineffective pieces. The weight of their tromping across our heart pushes breath away from our lungs. Such can take away your heart to fight.

Some dragons drop from the sky. Friends and family take on new visage. Competitors in the field swoop away clients. Disease strikes hard blows and finishes off with a slicing tail thumping our last resolve. They are real and must be engaged with what is left in our reservoir. A shield of faith and a helmet of salvation come in mighty handy in such encounters but they are only effective head on. From the back we are toast. Our courage can retreat after several engagements.

When dragons leave the lair and land in your road, remember the encouragement of John in the Revelation. They are not strong enough.

Whether you face lizards or dragons today, I ask the Father to encourage your courage to face the discouragement.

May He enchant your view to face the disenchantment.

May He bring new appointments to face the disappointment.

May He strengthen your confidence and connection to face the disconnect.

May He give you a vibrant heart to face the disheartenment.

A Good Plan for You.

I Kings 6: 37-38 Work began on the Temple in Ziv, the second month, during the fourth year Solomon was king over Israel. The Temple was finished during the eleventh year he was king, in the eighth month, the month of Bul. It was built exactly as it was planned. Solomon had spent seven years building it.

Clyde's Plan

Clyde's life was spent. After 45 years of construction, he looked for days at the lake. Fishing had always been relaxing for him. Now he could relax the rest of his years.

Enterprise Construction kept Clyde on the go. Sometimes he worked 60 hours a week on the new apartments and houses. There would be plenty of projects at the lake. But he liked to tinker. Now, he could finish out those cabinets for his wife. Their home had been the last to be tended. Cobbler's shoes, right?

Jake's Plan

Jake, the owner, pleaded with Clyde to build just one more house before he retired. This was a special favor. Clyde resisted. He really was spent. He really looked to quit the hard stuff. It was a big house with lots of special details for aesthetics. Plenty of stone and brick.

Overseeing the workers was the hardest part. They always wanted to cut corners and get the jobs done faster. Clyde loved quality construction. Okay. He agreed. One more house. Then goodbye long hours and hello rocking chair on the porch at the lake.

As the days moved slowly, Clyde began to cut corners. What the heck. This was his last job. Why wait for the right lumber to come in for the flooring. The leftover pressboard from the last house was good enough. This job became all about good enough. Get it over. No one would notice. It all gets covered in sheet rock anyway. People don't keep houses like they used to. Shoot, Clyde and his wife lived in the same house for all those 45 years. They had put up with cramped rooms when the kids were growing. They had patched and repaired and made it work.

Finally, the home was finished. It certainly was not Clyde quality behind the scenes, but it looked okay on the outside. Interior attic work had been complicated. They rigged some fixes that should hold at least ten years. That was enough to get past the five year homeowners warranty. Time for the lake.

Final Plan

The final walkthrough was on target to get Clyde to the lake before Spring crappie started biting. He was anxious to finish the inspection and turnover to Enterprise. Jake seemed to be taking longer than usual checking every detail to ensure satisfaction. Finally, he was done.

"Clyde, you've been a faithful worker and good friend." Jake started what sounded like it would be a speech. All of the principal partners had come out for this house. Clyde was stymied as to why it was so special. Sure, it was on a double lot and had beautiful landscaping scheduled. Sure, it was a big house with great interior detail. What is the big deal?

"So, Clyde, we've all agreed this is your house. It is our gift to you for your years of service."

Clyde's heart sunk. He began to think of all the problems skipped over in building this house. Now it was his home. He had built his own home. Bittersweet. Fractured joy.

A Plan for You

Every day we are building our house. Of course this story is constructed; hopefully, with a little more care and craft than Clyde's house.

Every day in your business and personal and community life you are building the environment in which you will live the next day.

You can build a great life, a great business, and a great community. Build the one in which you will be ecstatic to live every day.

God's Plan

You, I pray you find the light of God shining into your heart this week.

I pray you find moments of His glory that are irrefutably His intervention in your minutes.

I pray your heart finds warmness amid the stretch and press of living.

I pray you look into the face of a friend and see Jesus smiling back.

Why not have a bright moment, You?

There is a brightness in my heart today that brings to my remembrance the encouragements of Isaiah. Isaiah was a high ranking government counselor to six kings. His adaptability under that many administrations is an amazing testimony of itself. The influence of his life and insights gave leadership over six decades. Today, his writings guide millions in encouragement.

Part of Isaiah was an abiding hope in the future and a tenacity to stand under struggle. These two perform a synergy that reaches into our soul and produces positive results in action and thought. In war times he could declare, "Speak comfort to my people." In times of apathy, he could declare a need for righteousness and justice. In times of waste of prosperity, he could declare a commitment to feed the hungry and satisfy the afflicted soul. In times of disunion, he could declare a removal of the pointing finger and malicious talk.

For over 2700 years his words have stood tested and true and continue to encourage and support nations.

So why is today bright? Fingers are being pointed. Hunger is too rampant. Injustice comes too frequently. Peace is fragile. Apathy is evident. Afflicted souls gather in the streets. The choice is bright. Hope, tenacity, comfort, compassion, kindness, forgiveness, and mercy are all available.

Let's Pray

Father, I speak a blessing of brightness for my friend, You, this morning. These troubles we face are common to nations and generations. Others have survived and thrived and left encouragement for us to grasp.

Let hope come where vision is dim.

Let peace reign in our minds while bullets fly.

Let comfort encompass our hearts and minds when confusion shows face.

Let kindness guide our actions when rudeness interrupts.

Let forgiveness find a home as we forgive others even as we accept our own forgiveness.

Let mercy rule and allow others to recover their lives.

Bring brightness to our day.

Discerning Delivery

The following present week stories example rightly delivered words of truth in right time and demonstrate the power of this principle. A team is defended through integrity and timing. A mentor empowers through method and environs.

Bites Out of the Apple

A negative word at the right time bites. It pierces sensibility and stirs dissension. While promoting a new client, someone took offense. Actually, they created their own offense. There was no offense to be taken. Yet, some hidden anger or jealously or pain of their soul caused them to stab out at the faith of the client. Their venue was anonymous. Anonymous attacks come from people who lack integrity and courage. How sadly they live!

Salves of Silver

The venue they chose was an open online forum. Several people rose to the defense of the client and their right to express their faith, the business in serving the client, and the people involved. In the end, all but the anonymous attacker were defended both by people in name and other anonymous open forum responders.

Timing was everything. To have addressed the issue of client promotion in public as a client not as the philosophy of our business-to-business services would be out-of-time. No one is listening. Since an attacker opened the door, we were able to make some friends and promote the client. The attack allowed a setting of silver for apples of gold.

Mail of Truth

The epic tale of Beowulf includes a focus on his armor of mail shirt. In the end, it protects him from the claws of the monster and he triumphs in his quest. Truth rightly delivered can do the same for us. It can fit us for our tasks.

Over two days, a team of sales professionals dissected a book on approaching a certain prospect/client type. Each took time to read aloud and the discussion was open. The teacher/mentor pressed pertinent points at appropriate openings. The relaxed atmosphere in the country allowed disconnect from pressures. The method moved the material from printed page to mental melded metal.

Apples of truth entwined with filigree silver links producing a jewelry to be worn in the market. Ideas behind words can be worn and used like a piece of fine jewelry once integrated in right fashion and right time. The jewelry forms a belt of mail woven of elves silver to be worn in daily use. Truth becomes a belt that is useful for common and uncommon times. The individuals in the team have been truthfully equipped to serve both prospect and client.

Finding Time

Ideas are precious, You. Rightly presented at the right time and right setting, they become useful truths. Consideration every day has to be given in how we distribute information and discussion. Wisdom allows the negative to become strength and the strength to become useful power.

Prayer:

Wisdom cries out in the streets, Father of Love and Light. Pour wisdom over You. Enable You to see when timing is right and minds are open. Enable us all to be wise stewards of timing and setting to present truth and ideas and receive the rewards in this life as useful progress

Royal Living - Tight Lipped and Faithful

Remember, these proverbs are the selection of Hezekiah's men to help establish a royal and confident nation.

Proverbs 25: 9-10 If you have an argument with your neighbor, don't tell other people what was said. Whoever hears it might shame you, and you might not ever be respected again.

Tight Lipped

As a leader with a lot of connections, I get lots of questions. People are always wanting to know about other people. They may only know the public reputation, but they want any insider information they can get that is negative.

How do you feel about what they did? Did something else go on? How are they doing since........ happened?

My principle follows the advice of my mother. If you don't have anything good to say, don't say anything at all.

Brokers of Sales

Another question I get asked is to introduce sales people. Now if you have a great product or service that will help a friend, I enjoy helping two friends meet and communicate. But, if I don't really believe there is a smart deal for both, I steer clear. Why create a breach in a good relationship? Why take too much advantage of a friendship? It has to promise good value for both.

Gossip On Grand Ave

Many large companies provide a forum for staff to air questions and comments. Most are negative in nature. Most are anonymous jibes at someone or some department the person does not like. It does provide a tap into the grumble and does provide some outlet. Yet, it is always full of acid. The words of a talebearer go down into the belly and cause a breach in the spirit, a leakage of courage, and a disruption of confidence and collaboration. It is a spillage of argument and to my knowledge has never resulted in any positive change or action on the part of the company.

Hmmm...

Live royal. Live confident.

Living royal means living above the acid line of conversation. It means avoiding repeat of negative you know. It means staying tight lipped and confidential. Think about that word. Confidential comes from confident. When I am confident in who and whose I am, there is no need to leak negative on others. True or false, the acid does no good for anyone.

Living royal means protecting relationships from constant intrusion and invasion. Whew, don't you hate it when a friend has such little value for your relationship that they will sell access just to please someone else or make a deal for themselves? I introduce many people to each other when there is a value after much prayer and understanding both parties. Protect your friends. Live royal.

Coffee Klatch

Some years ago at a lunch table, some rude jokes were being told. Conversation had little value. People were being slaughtered in their absence. You've walked into such conversations. You don't need to hear a word. The winking eye and shuffling feet tell it all. From my table I could not hear the words, but I could see the furtive faces.

A young man walked into the snake nest unaware. He was looking for a little luncheon friendship. As the ringleader of rumor prepared to launch into another raunchy tale, he looked down the table and made a statement. This one I heard.

"I can tell this here. There is no one too good to hear it."

Another person at the table motioned to the young man and said, "Jack is good. He doesn't need to hear it."

The table went quiet. Someone finally had the courage to stand up with a comment to stop the slurs. I bet they were wanting the junk to stop and just did not know how to make it happen. For the rest of lunch, the tone of the table shifted to normal conversation and the most negative sitting at the table left the lunch room.

Be a Jack, who lives in such a way others appeal to goodness in your soul.

Prayer

Father, our days are full of decisions regarding what we know. Teach us to wash from our minds and hearts the negative normalcy of friends and acquaintances. Each of us has faults. Teach us to cover faults with love and mercy. Teach us to be mindful that all of us have access to life changing power in You and the right to recover in privacy and permission to grow.

It is hard enough, Father, when we fail this call to confidence and our anger and hurt cause us to repeat hurtful information. Snag it and cause the spread to be stopped rapidly. Show us mercy in our mistakes. Teach us strength and goodness of speech.

Let our ears be stopped to the noise of accusation and repetition of rumors and finger pointing that accompanies life. There is no positive value. No one will be encouraged. No positive change will come of such chatter. Give us courage to speak good when ill is spoken.

Give us presence that stops the mouth of accusation.

Finding Rest, my Friend.

Proverbs 16:20 Whoever listens to what is taught will succeed, and whoever trusts the Lord will be happy

My Friend, each of us has a litany of undone tasks. Leaders just can't avoid it. People come to us for answers. We see undone opportunities and tend to take them on ourselves. It happens. The list gets longer than we can ever address. Those tasks can have as much pressure as a hurricane bearing down on the coast of our rest. They just never seem to go away. Something always needs to be done next.

Trust enables rest. Trust enables us to step away from the pressure and believe we will be able to face it when the time is right. This is a confidence available in a successful relationship with Christ that I pray for you.

Our journeys are meant to bring us to places of rest and relaxation and at times do the opposite. In the struggle to find peace and rest, we become caught in the wrestling and miss the purpose for which we entered the fray.

As you work to strengthen family and community and personal living, I pray for your mental, physical, and spiritual stamina and rest.

Prayer:

Father, give my friend a restful moment from the pressures of life and responsibility.

Teach my friend how to enter a new season and level of confident rest that acts with decisiveness.

Affect hope with a promise of a brighter day ahead.

Affect faith that You come alongside and bring victory in tough spots.

Affect love that releases kindness and gentleness even when internal battles rage.

Let a confident, restful repose come up underneath my friend and paint a smile so family and friends would be blessed and life would stay fun and fulfilling.

Royal Living - Discretion Before Decisions

All these scriptures: New Century Version

Proverbs 25:9b-8 Because of something you have seen (and judged to represent a certain situation), do not quickly take someone to court (push for a decision). What will you do later when your neighbor proves you wrong? (and the final answer is totally different than you thought)

Proverbs 19:2-3 Enthusiasm without knowledge is not good. If you act too quickly, you might make a mistake.

People's own foolishness ruins their lives, but in their minds they blame the Lord.

Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust the Lord with all your heart, and don't depend on your own understanding.

Remember the Lord in all you do, and he will give you success

Email Hell

This week, there have been two streams of emails that demonstrated the wisdom of royal living. Several participants in the one are frustrated over a troublesome situation. It is not an easy fix. The issues are complicated and not understood to any significant level by any of the people in the discussion. All want it resolved. Many are ready to take action just to get the pain off of their list of things to do. The stream of vitriolic back and forth blame shifting is embarrassing.

Every person sees the situation from their pain point. It has been taken for decision without true consultation with all the neighbors. Now the person who posed a solution is seen as the cause of the situation not just a helper to resolve.

Expensive Chaos

A second situation demonstrates again how conclusion jumping can go awry. One jumped into the middle of a situation and demanded a solution. A partial solution was brought forward that was not reasonable to implement in a timely manner. It lags and lags and gets caught on other snags. A new solution will be drafted, surely. Yet no one will be happy. The root causes will still plague the situation and cause further consternation.

Wise Resolve

A client has issue with a coworker who is married to a worker. Whew! It affects business decisions and is costing the client mistakes and money. Through patience and listening and looking to the hearts of those involved, our team came up with a face-saving plan to address. Late Friday a communication came to me telling me the plan can be a big win for all. Instead of pushing for a decision, we found a way to encourage and promote friendship. Whew! Thanks, God.

Every Day Justice

There are many situations that come to mind this week alone. Each took key people discussing and some time cussing to come to joint vision. We don't like to listen, do we? We like to be right. We like to make decisions for others and then have them tell us we are right. It is not royal living. It is petty living. It is wasteful living, burns up internal energy, and isolates needed friends.

Sitting and Ducking

Just as many issues end up with analysis paralysis. Some folks don't know when to call the hand and get a decision made. That can be terminably frustrating for all. A conversation with a business partner against whom others brought accusations brought out an indecisiveness on the part of another involved. Their fence sitting and ducking of responsibility is causing all to struggle and the end client to suffer.

Royal Insight

To see into a matter before making a decision or calling for a decision brings long term resolution and productivity that lasts. It might take ten minutes or ten days or even ten months or ten years. Discretion knows when to congeal information and move. Discretion is part of royal living. To gather the facts, listen to others, make a decision, and trust the Lord to work it through to good completion is the heart of royalty.

There is no simple answer or formula to apply here. Discretion plus insight plus wisdom plus patience plus action plus trust wins the day for the royal. We will make mistakes and God will cover. Our true friends will know our heart and abide. All will prosper.

Prayer:

Father, life is so full of decisions. Situations jump in front of us all day and every day. Equip our eyes to see true. Equip our minds to think clear and with best heart to support others. Let trust of You come through as increased trust of others. Show us prosperous paths for decisions. Breed royal insight and timing into us that we might move with productive decisiveness.

7 it is better for him to say to you, "Come up here," than for him to humiliate you before his nobles.

Pennies For Names

At an industry function a pesty salesperson kept isolating me from the group. It was bothersome. It was painful. He will never sell to my company. The method of name dropping people he did not know well resulted in my dropping him from my list of potential vendors. In his space, I buy $100,000 a month. Nothing will go to his company.

Proving your ignorance of the needs of another by vaunting yourself forward through relationships or stance does not result in right results. It results in being pushed away from decision makers. So why do we do it?

Dollars for Listening

Another sales professional in the same product and service space listens. Her approach is open eared and malleable. When we conflict, we work through. She is welcomed in my office and among my team. There is no necessity for her to name drop to me or with my name. She just goes about her business. When I need a solution, I call her. In fact, I direct my staff to call her and get her advice.

Irritants

A continual dripping irritant is when a staff member uses my name to get someone else to agree with their idea. "Well, Phil said,........." and then something I never said is inserted or something totally out of context is included. When it gets back to me there is a persistent thought strain in my mind. A person who drops names to get approval is unsure of themself and their idea, unwilling to take personal responsibility, possibly disloyal, and definitely not convinced of their own direction. If you don't know where you are going, no road will get you there. You will end up in the wrong place every time.

This approach by a staff member tends to result in less influence and less appointed responsibility over time.

Cures

Live royal. Live confident.

There is a certain hubris to a confident person. They do not need to drop names. They do not need to sit in the front row. They do not need a light shined on them. They know who they are, take confident action, and assume responsibility. In time, they believe right will win over noise and persistent and diligent action will conquer any task. They study to show themself approved and focus energy and effort on results not impressions.

Prayer

Father, You are the author of confident hope and expectant faith. Bring such into You. Today show You direction and information that allows a persistent and diligent path through obstacles and into victories. Treat You as royal family.

May the eyes of our understanding be full of light to see the hope of our calling as royalty.

May the insight and inspiration of our hearts be encouraged to walk with excellence and steadfastness.

May we ever listen for the sound of Your power moving on our behalf in small and large exploits.

Royal Culture

Remember these verses are selected by the men of Hezekiah in researching wisdom for royal culture. In Christ, we are called to live as partakers of His divine nature. We are called children of God, a holy and royal priesthood.

Heaven and Earth

Between the two, there is unfathomable expanse of mystery. After all of our years, we understand so little. We look and look in our microscopes and telescopes and still understand so little.

Royal Search

Kings and leaders learn to be quiet and studied. Upcoming leaders must look into the life of the leader and learn on their own. Many secrets are held by leaders. They have learned over time and realize only those that study will be worthy of the information. Some leaders are more willing than others to be teachers and sponsors.

Pulling It Out

Some years back, I approached a leader and questioned whether I should pursue an MBA. He looked straight at me and recommended I get a "street smart" MBA. Then he set up a sequence of events to drive me into building a company from scratch within the larger company. The lessons have been coming for years as I interchange with many other leaders in the process. Some lessons are good. Some are painful. But the journey has been full of lessons. Along the way, it is my joy to pass on the lessons.

Prayer:

Father, help us to be both unsearchable and open to give. As we lead, let us hold dearly to the truths we learn. Help us to release them at the most appropriate times to the most appropriate individuals. Help us to be open and learn from those who lead around us.

Proverbs 25:1-2 These also are proverbs of Solomon which the men of Hezekiah king of Judah copied: It is the glory of God to conceal a matter, But the glory of kings is to search out a matter.

Royal Culture

When Hezekiah was preparing to be king, he did some research. His men went into the archives of Solomon and looked for wisdom related to running the kingdom. Out of over 3000 proverbs, we get chapters 25-29. These are proverbs designed for operating a great culture. Now that we finished Psalm 46, which was written after the angel took out 285,000 of the opposing army leadership, let's look at how to live like royalty in this world.

God's Hidden Treasure

God conceals. Jesus would tell parables that made a little sense, but not total sense. People scratched their head. Jesus would then explain to the disciples, His leaders. He reveals to His friends.

Royal Search

Children of the Creator with wisdom will search out a matter. They will look for nuggets in the concealed. Over time, they will see what they need to see to be successful.

Living Wisdom

A friend just put a great nugget on facebook. She's not been know for wisdom. When I made a comment about her growth, she responded she must be getting older. When we live and look, we learn. It happens. She is entering royal living.

Prayer:

Father, we all need wisdom. Let us live with royal intentions. Excite in us a sense of divine purpose and assignment. We are Your children. We are meant to rule over life and circumstance. Reveal. Show. Inspire our hearts with Your wisdom dealt in love into our hearts.

Psalm 46:11 The Lord of Heaven’s Armies is here among us; the God of Israel is our fortress.

When the stillness of God enters our heart and mind, we are ready to see His presence.

He is here among us.

All the time, he is here with us, Evotion.

Everyday, the Father of All Goodness walks with you, Evotion.

Confidence in Him allows us to see.

Trust in Him enables us to stand in His protection with simple confidence and awareness.

Questions

Every day there is someone questioning what I do. Is this the right business? Will it work? Do you know what you are doing? That is just the friends.

They can't get it on time. He doesn't have enough experience. His team is young. That is the competitors.

Will it really work? How can I be sure? Is there another place cheaper? That is the clients.

Confidence

Walking with God allows me to relax and keep walking with confidence. His affirmation keeps us going. His confidence and interruption in our lives keeps us focused on moving forward. Not every question has a ready answer.

Trips and Toughness

In a proposal meeting yesterday, there were some tough moments. Two groups went before us to the committee making decisions. One was definitely stressed and gave up asking. They took a no. One of the the second group was just as fearful, but one in the group was confident. They received a yes. My partner and I had never been in this room, city, or group. It was a different situation. The decision makers opened up and asked many good questions on our proposal. Our confidence in who we were and what we proposed broke through the resistance. We received permission to advance. That was our yes. That is what we wanted. In that meeting, God was there. All the time and all the way, God was there.

Prayer

Father of Love and Living, thanks for always being here. Thanks for being with me in the middle of questions. Thanks for being with all of us.

The Steel and Still Will of God.

Psalm 46: 10 "Be still, and know that I am God! I will be honored by every nation. I will be honored throughout the world."

The Will of God

God has a will to honored. That will of His opens opportunity for us. His will is powerful enough to interrupt our problems and bring solutions. It is full of steel resolve. Of course, we need to allow His will to operate in our lives. Opening our will to allow His will brings solutions that will bring honor to him.

Destined Moments

Discussion today with a coworker entered into "destiny". Last week, we had an incredibly productive and record breaking situation. Exactly when we needed a repair, the electrician finished. A new piece of production equipment had wiring issues. We have been chasing the problem for months. Exactly when we had to have the equipment to support record customer loads, the electrician found and finished the job. Destiny was noted. Destiny for us is our way of saying, "God interrupted" without being offensive to the unbelieving. These situations happen enough in our business that there is no denial that we are not in charge. God will be honored. Such moments can only bring acknowledgement and honor to God when we allow it.

Daily Opening

For me, opening my world to His will is a daily event. Why would I not do that? Why would I not allow Him access to change my moments for His honor? It takes some stillness. It takes quietness before Him to allow for listening and allowing. Open your day to His action. His still will enters your day.

Know He Is and He Is A Rewarder

Those that come to God need to know that He is and He is a rewarder of those that diligently seek Him. This activity opens us to moments that honor Him through answering us. He is steel and resolute. He is still and ready.

Matamoros Expanded

A few weeks back my prayers for Matamoros, Mexico began leaning to touching more of the city. Today, I received the call. August 12-14th, we will go first to two colonias on Friday and Saturday and then to the church on Sunday. How beautiful to be able to take school supplies and spread Good News. Our ability to do open air meetings in this hard city will depend on your prayers. It can be dangerous and definitely hot. It will honor God and reach people who have no ability to come to us. Doing the different means being "steel willed".

Prayer:

Father, there is no doubt Your will is meant to affect moments in our work and business and in our touching neighbors. All of these areas are important to You. When You touch every area of our life, You are honored. When we allow Your interruptive grace in visible manner, You are honored.

Be undeniable for Evotion.

Be interruptive for Evotion.

Be intensive and bring honor to You on behalf of Evotion.

Be it done to us according to Your word.

Breaking Bows. Snapping Spears. Burning Shields.

Psalm 46:9 He causes wars to end throughout the earth. He breaks the bow and snaps the spear; he burns the shields with fire.

Vary The Distance

Issues, problems, glitches, and obstacles seem to have a distance characteristics. Some come from far away like an arrow from the bow. Some come from a closer source like a spear thrown. Then some run direct to our face with the presence of sword and shield. On the other side of that equation, we need to move into the camp of war of our enemies. They don't come to us. We go to them.

Long Range

God sees it all, Evotion. From a distance the issue with which we struggle is guarded by the archer. We see the problem. It is not close enough to bother us, but we know we need to address it and move closer to deal with it. Letting the problem come close can be exceedingly dangerous. Yet, the arrows of pain come at us as we focus on the issue. It can be more comfortable to leave it at a distance. God can break the bow of the archer. This allows us to move closer. The bow is constructed of fear and intimidation. Those two imposters can be rendered harmless with trust in Him.

Short Range

Move up closer to the issue. Once the bows of fear and intimidation are broken, we expose anger and angst. Any real obstacle will be throwing and thrusting spears of anger and angst toward us. The more determined and closer we chose to deal with the issue, the more these two will rise. They want us to go away. The burning issue wants to stay unresolved. Our internal resistance to change and growth would love to stop us before we get close enough to eliminate the issue and bring peace.

Close Up

Get it? The fear and intimidation and anger and angst are handled. Trust in God is strong. The problem has yet one weapon, the shield of self preservation. No one likes to cut off his own flesh. Most problems lie in that arena. It is our desire to stay in control and do it our way that raises the last shield. It is not some other person or some other entity that resists the most. It is our own desire and resistance to submission and change that poses the greatest battle.

Settling

Submit to God, resist the devil of your own desire, and peace will flood. He is able and willing to walk alongside and break the bow that shoots the arrows of fear and intimidation. He is able and willing to run alongside and snap the spears of anger and angst. He is able and willing to fly with us into the fray and see the shield of self preservation burned through amazing grace and mercy.

This Week

This week was an amazing moment. A strong enemy became a strong ally. It is lovely when God works with us to see that. It is beautiful, when we face ourselves and allow Him to turn enemy into friend. Deal with your self and He will shift the others. The teams at work produced at a rate quite possibly out of range of our capability. Really, there is no way they could have done it, but they did. In one week, we out produced our closest competitors best month. Our new client interest in the last ten days exceeds the prior 18 months and we are reeling to meet the demand. We are launching new product at an alarmingly rapid speed. How?

Our enemies are at peace with us. When that condition arrives through determined confrontation and conflict resolution, an amazing door of opportunity opens. The energy being spent staying at a distance is now available to grow and produce. A limitless lifestyle can be engaged.

Yesterday was a good day of great energy. A few times this week I pushed my body to new running distances. It worked. By going past my barriers, a new resiliency and strength entered my legs. It resulted in bounce and vibrancy in my step so I could enjoy my weekend with no tiredness. It took facing the enemy of unbelief.

Prayer:

Father, now, what am I going to do? What is Evotion going to do? You promise to disable the distant and the not so distant and the close up issues that keep us from entering peace. Yet, we would love to stay the same. We would love to let someone else deal with our issues. We would love to avoid the conflict and simply stay out of range living in our fear and intimidation and anger and angst and self preservation. Move us. Bring us to the line of battle. Put strength in our legs and determination in our souls. Let Your love and mercy and grace arise in us and let our enemies be neutered and scattered before us. What do we need to face this week that will bring a peace to one more area and release a new strength? Reveal it, Father. Embrace us and take us into the battle with all comfort and peace.

Evotion, God Can Make Your Wars To Cease..

Peace

Peace is a fleeting fantasy for most. Peace never comes on the face of the earth. Peace comes in the heart. Man is reconciled to God and that is peace. Evotion is reconciled to God and that is peace. Relationships reach a point of love and mutual support and that is peace. A person is settled in their thoughts and ways and content with what they have and that is peace. And war rages.

War

War is the conflict of purposes. One purposes in their heart to do one thing and another purposes to do another. They meet in the field of competition. They meet in the field of battle. Fierceness ensues and fights fly and war starts with the purpose of victor and conquered. Purposes conflict continually.

Resolution

Seldom does a war resolve the conflict of purposes. It may settle the dispute for a season. It may exhaust one group or discourage the leader. It may destroy so much that there is no reason to go on fighting. Rarely is there a settling and agreement and joining of purposes in war.

Settling

God settles wars. He makes them to cease. In His infinite power and wisdom, He will step in to a situation and resolve it. Oh, another conflict of purpose may arise among the hearts and minds of mankind. Creation groans for us to settle our fights. Wars and rumors of wars pervade our cultures. Yet, God can bring about lasting situations of peace where mutual respect can win out for the majority and most can rest in a land of peace.

Peace Brings Prosperity

War is expensive. Resources are consumed in fighting instead of producing. People fear growth because they fear which power will control the harvest of economy. What is gained in months can be lost in a moment in times of war. Peace enables confident action and production to continue. Mankind is well able to build and prosper when living in times of peace.

Bringing It Home

So why do we continue in war in our lands if God can make them stop, Evotion? War starts in the heart of mankind focused on controlling the reality of others. In our limited wisdom and minute scope of vision, we look to force others to live our realities and visions. It is the way of mankind. It is our curse. Christian against Christian bent on being the most right of all or dictator against the world bent on having her way or the economic determination of one nation against the weakness of another all are situations that lead to war.

Next Door

Then there is the way we live. At a restaurant tonight, a waitress had been serving our group of 20+ for an hour. I took the time to ask her if we could pray for her. At first, she hesitated and then stopped and came over beside me. The father of her four year old and one year old had just left them the day before. She really did not know what she was going to do next. War had entered her home, her safe place, her place of sanctity. Our homes should be undisturbed places of rest. It is the promise of Isaiah 32. Yet, war is attacking her family. Prayer is hard. This hurt me as we prayed.

Prayer:

Father, You are the Father of Peace and Comfort and Stability and Life. Today my friend, , and I and all those around us have some war in our zone. Bring peace. Stop the war. Find a comfort and a healing. And Father bless my new friend in the restaurant tonight. We join with her that a hope of salvation would overwhelm her. All of us need the pouring of Your Holy Spirit to bring our homes into the place of being an undisturbed place of rest. Bring that reality and ceasing of war to Evotion. Bring it to me. Bring it to that waitress.

Come, See, Embrace Glory.

Psalm 46:8 8 Come, see the glorious works of the Lord: See how he brings destruction upon the world.

What is the DownLine Impact of This Action?

Perception of the acts of God guides our interpretation. God's works of destruction and desolation are glorious works. When He chooses to act in a situation or an environment, He is fully intentional and focused on the downline impact. What will come of this action? Glory will come always.

Several years ago, Dr. Carillo began working in Matamoros to see men pulled from the pig pens of drugs and alcohol. One of the successes today was literally living in a pig's pen and brought in by his family. Dr. Carillo looked into the eyes of desolation and saw something glorious. Today many families of the men have come into the kingdom, not just the men. Today, children living in the absolute desolation of the dumps get medical attention and food. Desolation has become glory.

Who Else Needs To Know?

The Psalm of Hezekiah pleads with us to come and behold. It is good to look into desolation. Don't avoid it. When desolation exists, glory is eminent. It takes us being in the mix. We need to know. Our friends need to know. Come and behold.

When Raul asked me to go to Matamoros the first time, I expected to just be a helper. We would hand out the toys and pray for the work. Yet, he wanted my heart to see the desolation and see the glory of redemption. Dr. Carillo expected me to speak and encourage and pray with the people. They were in cahoots on what they wanted. Others needed to know. Of course, I had to tell others, who are now supporters of the work in prayer and action and giving.

What is the Best Use of My Time Based on Those Answers?

God and Hezekiah and Raul and Dr. Carillo are fully aware when you point to His glory and point to desolation, action has to be taken. They are aware these two items together will cause us to move.

Such a simple combination of directions. Come behold the glorious works of God. Come and look at the desolations and destructions. You will never be the same.

Take a Closer Look

They may be in your family, your neighborhood, your community, or your business. You don't have to go to another nation to see the glory of God. You don't need to leave your neighborhood to see desolation. Abortion, divorce, drug addiction, alcoholism, panic, depression, and other ills live within the close circle of your friends. They are waiting on the glorious works of God.

Prayer:

Father, let Your glorious works loose in the desolations of our lives. In our own hearts and minds there are possibly desolations that need modified to glory. In our families, there is need. In our neighborhood, there is need. The world looks to resolve desolations with band aids and simple touches. There is a need for strong and definitive action from Your throne. Help us, Lord. Help us to see and tell and act.

Are you going with us to Matamoros, Evotion?

Now, that question got your attention.

Through prayer and contemplation of the actions of God, it is my earnest conclusion that a link exists between revival in Oklahoma City and revival in Matamoros. Our team from OKC is headed again to Matamoros August 12th-14th for Back to School and ministry time.

Revival
Revival is a concerted and tangible change in a community to live according to the principles of the kingdom of God in business, community, congregation, government, and personal life.

Matamoros
The environment of Matamoros is violent and hopeful. There are many people looking to God to bring answers to the cartel wars that rage in this border town. A group of congregations is working to see support for an outreach and church led by Dr. Carillo. CAREVI, House of Restoration and Life hosts a men's recovery center alongside a congregation. Over the last few years the congregation has grown significantly from a few people to maximized attendance at over 200. Families are entering into the kingdom, not just individuals. This is the type impact Christianity must see to change a community, to see revival.

Other congregations are gaining interest in joining in the revival. They are not just looking for financial assistance, but spiritual impact.

Raul
Raul Machado is a key man in this work. Raul came from Matamoros and lives in Oklahoma City. His an American citizen as was his father. Yet, Mexico is on his heart as his extended family lives there. Over the years, Raul has taken hope and healing into CAREVI through food and clothing and supplies.

Phil
Phil Larson and PrayerMetro joined Raul three years ago. This brought a powerful spiritual element to the work of compassion. Miracles are happening deep in the lives of the people.

Others
The congregations of IVVC, Betesda, Antioch, Faith Latino, Eagle's Crest, Tabernaculo de Fe, and Segundo Nazareno have joined to help. Some businessmen have also helped. There is a building support base of prayer and action from Oklahoma City to Matamoros. It is working.

Revival Needs Wood
When a fire starts, it must be fed fresh daily. The fire started in Matamoros and Oklahoma City needs wood added in both areas. In Matamoros, we must add congregations. They have started coming to us. In Oklahoma City, we must add spiritual renewal and joint compassionate works. Both cities should be experiencing simultaneous revival.

Evotion, Ride Above The Fight

Psalm 46: 7 The LORD of Hosts, The Lord Almighty, The Lord of the Armies Encamped For War is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.

The Lord Almighty

The depth of the Hebrew that we translate Lord Almighty speaks of war. The hosts of God, the angelic powers, are camped for war. They are ready to be dispatched at the command of God. Ministering spirits are these angels set in opposition to the resistive demonic spirits and to physical enemies. God is their God. He is their commander-in-chief. This is the most commonly used name for God by the prophets.

Heady

That is quite heady stuff for a Christian. Do I really believe there are angels camped on my behalf to do war with my enemies? Yes. Joshua did and let the Captain of the Hosts lead him in great battles. Hezekiah did and 285,000 of his enemies were struck down in an evening. Jehosaphat did and his praisers unleashed an uprising in the enemy camp. Elisha did and he walked directly into the enemy stronghold though his city was surrounded by the enemy. Jesus did and he was sustained in the desert and during intense preparation prayer. Paul and Silas did and the jail was opened up. How do you believe?

With Us

Now for the real heady stuff. The Lord of Those Armies is with us. He is beside us. He walks the same path we walk. He observes our moments and our days and our challenges and our faults and our failures and our enemies. He is with us. This Lord of amazing actions and world shattering push and access to armies camped for war is with us.

The God of Jacob

Note the reference to Jacob, not Israel. This is not about a covenant with a nation. God covenants directly with men and women. With Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob, God promised to individuals. Out of those promises comes blessings to nations and families and companies and organizations. He promises to individuals. He walks with individuals.

Fortress

A fortress is a safe place in the war. It is a place you can breathe and relax and be assured you will last out the attack. When God is your fortress, you are secure.

Real Days

Over the last two weeks, there have been specific attacks against me and those that walk with me. Intense moments have been too frequent. Lies and innuendo popped up unexpectedly. In truth, some moments I handled with composure and confidence. In truth, some moments I handled badly and gave away my confidence. Against wisdom, I started in a direction to take solutions into my own hands instead of trusting the Lord of Hosts. Against good discretion, I began to fight back, man's way. Yet, in all, I reminded myself of His promises and protection. It kept me in check. That confidence kept me from attacking back. Bunkering into the fortress of His protection allowed me to adjust.

Riding High Above

What brought the adjustment was a simple insight. On Father's Day, my family joined me downtown for lunch and a walk. My granddaughter, Saryn, reached a point where she was tiring some during the walk. Like I have done for decades with kids, I picked her up and set her on my shoulders. There is a joy up there on those shoulders. A child feels above all the world and fully protected. Who can touch her on Poppa's shoulders? That is where I placed myself and my team in my prayers and thoughts. I placed us right on the shoulders of the Lord of Host and the God of Jacob. Capturing that moment in my mind, shifted me back to confident focus and trust.

Prayer

Lord Almighty, You are the Captain of the Hosts. There are angels camped around us. Together, we walk. Lift me. Lift Evotion. Lift those that walk with us. Place us in your fortress of love and confidence. Dispatch whatever is needed to bring us to good success.

Free to Be Evotion.

Free To Be

Someone made a comment to me about a local university being "white". Then they apologized for having to say what they said. She was concerned the Latino community was not taking advantage of a great resource. For a moment I was quizzical about why she apologized. Of course that university is primarily a "white" population and not representative of the community percentages, except in some sports scholarships. Why did she need to apologize?

Odd Man In

Some years back I was at a meeting of the Concerned Clergy for Spiritual Renewal. There were some tense statements made concerning the "white" community and then the room became quiet. A good friend of mine addressed the group saying, "Phil is just one of us, you are free to say what you want to say." It was a great compliment. The conversation went back into open mode.

Time Will Tell

Over the years I've been called a few names to my face and behind my back, had friends walk away, and been left in embarrassing situations not able to understand the words spoken whether in English or Spanish because I just could not relate. It has taken listening, absorbing and changing.

Process of Freedom

In the process, I believe I have more freedom today through submission than I had through being right. I am free to worship with friends in Orthodoxy, Roman Catholicism, Methodism, Presbyterianism, Baptists, Nazarene, Pentecostals, Full Gospel, Faith, and others. The door and platform of White, Black, Latino, African American, Hispanic American, and others are open and enjoyed.

Rights?

I am free to not push my race, culture, religion, or sexual status on someone else.

I am free to enjoy another person as a creation of God not a "whatever they are hung up about".

I am free to work and play with babies and octogenarians.

I am free to express my opinions and beliefs and let others decide what to believe and emote and how to respond.

I am free to live in a land that protects me being, well, me.

I am free to make a new friend, who may have radically different background and opinion and not be anxious.

What a blessing of Independence in our great nation. How awful it is to see so many angry about living in a land of such freedom.

The Apology

Well, anyway, it took me a minute to understand she apologized because she thought I might in someway be offended in relation to her reference to White. LOL. I guess I just don't think of myself as being my color or the heritage of my grandparents or in relation to anything other than just me, a reborn creation of God painted by His Spirit to merge more and more into His image. From Him came all creation and every race and He is my ultimate Father.

Free At Last, Thank God, Almighty, Free At Last

Yes, I am free to just be me. And I am free to see those around me as who they are not what they wear for skin or for clothes or where they or their grandparents lived. I have the freedom to live my Christian faith and allow others to live their faith. I have the freedom to not agree, but to respect.

This is freedom for me. It is just hard for me to think of myself in terms of race or color. Anyway, I am an all American mutt of many continents.

I pray with all my inner man that you find a great freedom celebration deep in your soul, Evotion, this weekend. It is not just about a national birthday, but state of mind that we can be who we are and not be defined by our past or condition of birth. That is freedom.

This Beauty Dissolved.

Psalm 46:6 He uttered His voice, the earth melted. NKJV

This Beauty.

One beauty of our world is the intricate design of God underlying the visible surface.

How purposeful is His handiwork.

How powerful is His creation.

Pieced and Patterned.

The whole of creation is pieced and patterned from the sounds of God's voice. He spoke and the stars appeared. He spoke and the earth formed. He spoke and the animals crawled into existence and flew into the air.

Dissolved.

By His thundering voice, He can take the components of this world apart, dissolve the connections, and melt the created substance. The hills are His. The cattle are His. The building are His. The creation is His.

Unhinged.

Our raging and fighting and anger against the design of God can result in Him taking it apart. How it must pain His soul to see His creation abused against design. It is enough to result in Him returning a creation of His hand to nothing. To see His creation abused so pricks His heart He would rather remove it from the visible design.

Honored.

To honor Him is to honor His creation. To honor His creation is to honor Him.

Prayer: Precious Father, God of Creation, Breather of Life, touch our hearts. Let us find Your design in all Your handiwork. Show us the inner beauty fashioned with the kindness of Your words. Prevent us from wasting the outflow of Your words. Pour gentleness into our spirit by Your Spirit and let us rest in Your provision.

Raging Crumblings

Rage

Rage creates chaos. Movement causes crumbling. This single verse in different translations show us a deep truth. When we rage against the designs and principles of our Creator, we end up shifted and eventually crumbling. What we build comes apart under the heat and shaking of rage and chaos.

Sensibility

Whether we have a business raging against the principles of smart economics or a marriage in chaos due to inappropriate expectations or a thought life full of anger and angst, crumbling will come. God so loves the systems of the world He created, He sent His Son to restore sensibility and rightness into them and us in them. Understand, our thrashing against sound wisdom and principles set in motion will cause the ground underneath us to shift and the mountain to fall and crush us.

Instruction

There is wisdom in this simple sentence. It is instructive. Cease the raging and the chaos leaves. Cease the shifting and avoid the crumbling.

Experience

Different organizations for which I have worked come to mind. In most of them, my task was to work through an overhaul of a portion of the organization and bring it out of chaos. In retail, healthcare, non-profit, insurance, and discount operations, this core instruction of ordering organization and life applies. The kingdom had crumbled and my task was to bring it back to stability. Every time, there was a raging and fighting against normal principle and sensibility. All it took was discovering the real purpose of the organization, setting it right in principle and focus and the order settled. That is not easy, but predictable. It applies to our lives in many ways.

Prayer: Father, each of us has some portion of life out of line with Your principles. Each of us has some task ahead that needs ordering according to Your thoughts. Your word tells us that to that person that orders their way correctly, You will show salvation and fullness of joy and peace.

Father, I want that. I want that for my friend, Evotion. Let orderliness envelop all areas of life. Let joy and peace overwhelm and reverse any anger or chaos in or outside our lives. Cause the bubbling of Your Holy Spirit from deep inside to order our thoughts and conversation and living aright.

Help, right early...

Psalm 46:5 God is in the middle of us; we shall not be moved: God shall help us, and that right early. (modified a little).

So, trust in God is not so tricky.

Or is it?

Trust brings God into our situations. Maybe we don't really want Him there. Recently, when working through some frustrations, it was in prayer I could see part of my life bred in fear. That fear was not something I wanted to address. Why not leave it alone?

God is in the middle.

After a mid-day run in the neighborhood to clear my mind, I opened facebook on my smartphone. Pastor Charles had left a posting noting pain is a good place to look for energy and motivation to address undercurrents. Ouch. "God, why not just stay out of my situation? I like my hidden pain." It took some doing, but I faced it and moved on to higher ground in my thinking and heart.

God is in the middle. We shall not be moved.

Working through updating my business plan, I found great progress. How did He get it done? Surely, my efforts are not what did it. We are progressing in areas not planned while struggling in some others. In the balance, we are ahead of plan.

God is in the middle. We shall not be moved. God shall help

The result of trouble can be resolution. There is plenty of trouble to be shared. God helps. He intervenes.

Right now, a friend and I are working to help men and families in Matamoros. The results are incredible. Many congregations in OKC have come alongside. A dirt floor is now a finished church. When we go in August, we expect 500 kids at back to school. The first time a few years ago was less than 100. Somehow, God will help and get it done, just like every year.

God is in the middle. We shall not be moved. God shall help us. And that right early.

What a laugh. Right early means expressly in the nick of time. Rarely is He earlier than we need. Always is He on time.

In our business, we are working on a planned revenue growth. We have hit it surprisingly exactly on the day need it. It can be stressful and joyful and stirs my thankfulness.

In the outreach to Matamoros, we have always had exactly what we needed.

On a lighter note, I am back running. It is hot. My feet hurt. I am struggling. For Father's Day, I received a gift of a pair of UKGEAR running shoes. They are incredible. Six miles later, my feet don't hurt and I am running with much better endurance. The heat was just about to do me under and the foot pain was working to stop me totally. Just right early.

Prayer:

So, Father, trusting You brings You into my situation. So often, I would like to handle my situations without You. But You come in response to my trust. You come at just the right turn. You come and make our efforts in what we consider small and in what we consider big to work at just the right time. Pain can be erased. Progress can be encouraged. Joy can be exploded. All because You are You. Thanks, Father.

Why I love being Dad.

There are so many men that walk away from the task of fathering. Many reasons drive them. Bad fathering may have left a strange taste in their mouth. Conflicts with the mother become more than they want to overcome. Feelings of inadequacy plague their thoughts. Most just don't know what else to do. They have come to the end of the road in their knowledge of fathering and just walk away confused. Some have made mistakes they don't feel can be corrected or forgiven.

Any of these situations can be resolved. In fact, every father has to deal with each of these situations in some measure during his time as a father. Any of these fathers can be positive influences in the lives of their children. It may not be easy. It may not be quick. But it can move to a better place than where it is today with knowledge and with work.

So, why do I love being Dad?

Dad is not a name. Dad is a title. Dad is an appelation given from children with love. Dad is a honor and calling greater than all given of God.

First, Dad is a calling of God. The Father calls Himself Father. Then he calls men to be fathers and carry His highest calling. That is some calling. Dads give children their first and many times most influential impression of the Father. That is a huge responsibility and privilege. It is the highest honor a person can be given. I get to carry the Father's primary call and name.

Second, Dad is a solution. At the close of the Old Testament, we are told that unless the heart of the father is turned to the child and the heart of the child is turned to the father, our land is cursed. At the opening of the New Testament, we are told that John would come to again call the heart of the father to the child as an opening to the ministry of Jesus. The curse of fatherlessness is abortion, divorce, broken families, drug abuse, and other social ills tied to the lack of a father's heart being for his child enough to make a difference. Being a dad with a heart for his children is preventative maintenance to stop a curse. Being a dad when the going gets rough is a solution to quicker life repair for a child.

Third, Dad is an honor earned. When a child calls you Dad from deep in their heart of love, how can an honor be greater. When they are young, they believe you are super man and can do no wrong. Then they come of reasonable age and see your faults. That can be a hard time to be a dad. But, if you hold through and continue to love, they will come to a knowledgeable love for you that is stronger than that of the young. As the children reach their own adult life, you continue to be Dad, but also get to be a friend and have a dual relationship. Dad is an honor earned.

Fourth, Dad is a commission to the community. A real Dad can take on a place in the community as a coach, mentor, and helper. In my case, I have four adult children that have adopted me to serve them as Dad. Every Dad has more capacity to love and nuture and care than he can ever give away. The love of children restokes his capacity every day. A real Dad can take time to influence through being a visible volunteer in some capacity.

Fifth, Dad is a lifetime. A dad is a dad until he passes from this life to the next. You never quit being a dad. On your deathbed, you will still be Dad to your children.

Sixth, Dad leaves a legacy. The Father tells us that the blessings of a father go four generations. Wow. Think of the power of being a dad. Your blessings of love and care and creativity will persist into the future after you die.

So, this Father's Day, if you are a Dad, enjoy it. If your Dad is still around, thank him and honor him.

Ephesians 3: 13: Wherefore we desire that we faint not at tribulations for the saints, which is our glory. 14: For this cause we bow our knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15: Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, 16: That he would grant us, according to the riches of his glory (expressed divine image, will, and presence), to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; 17: That Christ may dwell in our hearts by faith; that we, being rooted and grounded in love, 18: May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; 19: And to know the love of Christ, which passed knowledge, that we might be filled with all the fullness of God.

Paul was a praying man. In many of his letters, he would shift into prayer from teaching. "Pray without ceasing," he wrote. Here is insight into prayer for fathers and what they father out of the heart of the Father.

The Deepest Heart

Fathering is at the deepest heart of God. Jesus started His teaching on prayer, "Our Father." Jesus said, "..., if you have seen Me, you have seen the Father." John the Baptist was to be one in the Spirit of Elijah to turn the heart of the fathers to the children and the hearts of the children to the fathers. This was the opening of the new covenant. 400 years earlier, Malachi closed the old covenant. His last words told us the spirit of Elijah must come to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children and the hearts of the children to the fathers for cursing to leave the land.

Fathered Groups

This word, translated fathers or families in the letter to the Ephesians, literally means "fathered groups." Our prayer is for the fathers, the ones who bring life to and protect over and build.

What We Need

In this prayer, there are four keys to effective prayer for those that father.

Power to Endure

In the life of every father, there will come times when our strength begins to wane. We want to give up. We want to give in. We want to run and hide. A father must stand tall and strong in days of adversity and success. Both need strength to endure.

Compassion to Motivate

No father works for himself. Every father gives for those being fathered. In recent interviews with men for Father of the Year, each responded the same way to the same question. Each was asked about sacrifices they had made for their families. Each responded there was no sacrifice. Everything they did was simply a part of living as a father. It is just what you do.

Presence of God to Energize

In the mornings, it is time to get up. There are times we do not feel like getting up to battle another day. A father must rise with energy every morning to the war. His energy comes from the anointing of the Holy Spirit for the task ahead. He needs refreshing for energy. He needs the energy bar of the presence of the Holy Spirit.

Faith to Appropriate

Getting the job done, means getting results for those fathered. A man recounted how he was working six 12 hour days for his family and another. The father of the other family was in jail. The kids needed a dad. He was willing to take all he had and appropriate extra work to bless them. We need to pray for fathers to take out of the treasures of heaven and apply to those fathered.

Fathers stir the inner spirit.

2 Timothy 1:6-7 For this reason I remind you to keep alive the gift that God gave you when I laid my hands on you. For the Spirit that God has given us does not make us timid; instead, his Spirit fills us with power, love, and self-control.

We should all be thankful for those people who rekindle the inner spirit." Has someone rekindled your fire? Have you been that rekindling for someone else?" Stephen Covey

Fathers stir the inner spirit.

Three men come to mind when I contemplate this verse and thought. Bishop Frank Tunstall of the Pentecostal Holiness Church and Abuna Constantine Nasr of the Antiochan Orthodox Church and Dale Gentry, a prophetic evangelist. All have spent time with me in hard moments and stirred up the gift in me.

Bishop Tunstall has been a great friend at hard moments. When I need a counselor and friend, he is always there. He has been a promoter of the work of fathering and unity in the city. No one believes in me more than Dr. Tunstall. At times of dealing with grief and loss, he has been there. At times of sorting in our city, he has been there. That special touch of a man dedicated to growing others is rare and much appreciated. Thanks, Dr. Frank.

Abuna Nasr is a ninth generation priest. Born in Jerusalem and Palestinian in heritage, he is a rare blessing. He is full of wisdom in all things dealing with family and the ministry. Growing up with over 400 years of priestly heritage in the Holy Land is a gift. I pray my children will be able to look back in 400 years and discover the lineage of Christian service unbroken. Abuna is one of the three Aramaic words for father. One stands for "Divine Father". None of us can call any but God that title. Another stands for earthly father or biological father. Abuna is for spiritual father. Fr. Nasr is Abuna to me. He has spoken spiritual blessing and wisdom into my life and I hold that gift and relationship in utmost respect. Thanks, Abuna Nasr.

Dale has been sensitive to watch over my life for decades. His prayers and encouragements are many times received at just the right moment. Those words reveal his personal attention to my life. As he travels the world on a regular basis, he takes time at the right time to encourage. Thanks, Dale.

These men from what some might think are polar ends of the Christian spectrum have similar wisdom and encouragement for me and take time for me. It is amazing how consistent their words are. They do not just speak. They speak from a heart of prayer and life lived in communication with the Holy Spirit. What a blessing to have such men be fathers that breath life into my spirit and stir up gifts. Without them, I doubt I would have stood when I needed to stand many times in the journey.

Action: So back to Covey's questions: Has someone rekindled your fire? Tell them thank you. Have you been one to rekindle the fire in another? Do it again.

Prayer:

Father, I speak life into the fire in my friend, Evotion.

Let a stirring in the belly be instigated and inspired by Your Holy Spirit inside.

He is a well of joy in desert of despair.

He is a voice of courage in a maelstrom of mistakes.

He is a foundation of strength in our waffling weakness.

He is our teacher and comforter and encourager and friend.

Help us to receive His help in the words and hands of others.

Help us to allow Him to move through us into the life of another.

Fathers Build Skills in Sons and Daughters

1 Timothy 1:18 Timothy, my child, I entrust to you this command, which is in accordance with the words of prophecy spoken in the past about you. Use those words as weapons in order to fight well,19 and keep your faith and a clear conscience.

Fathers Build Skills in Sons and Daughters

Skill building is an heritage of good fathering. Think about your most critical skills? Where did you get them? In a classroom? From an individual? I bet it was an individual. Classroom is good. Hands on over time can be better and longer lasting.

For several years, Dick Webber and I have traveled together. Days of windshield time have taught me what no classroom can teach. His investment in me has developed a keen sense of listening to prospective customers and serving their needs. Dick and his team had worked with me in years past as I was an Operations' Director for a large congregation. Somewhere, he saw something in me worth developing.

Dick has a heart for the church and the effectiveness of the gospel. Genius invention pours from him. A software product for good financial and outreach management birthed from this ingenuity and heart several decades back.

Developing the understanding of the product for congregations at the annual conference of the National Association of Church Business Administrators has been a joint project for us. From Boca Raton, Florida to Nashville, Tennessee to Dallas Texas to Keystone, Colorado to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Chicago, Illinois, Dick and I have driven, flown and spent days on our feet talking to folk. Along the road, we have discussed politics, world issues, bible verses, leadership, salesmanship, hunting dogs, customer service technology and archeology. There is no way to thank him enough for the investment in my life.

Dick has fathered into me critical skills I need today for success. God uses it in working with congregations and in the business arena. My children prosper because I have been changed and can hear their hearts better. His words have become weapons of skill available to me in every endeavor. When we started spending time together, I had no idea where we would end up. I still don't know because the end is far away. We walk together along a path.

Action: Are you listening? Is there someone in your direct or indirect path asking for your time? Maybe there is a skill to be built in you or for you to build in them.

Prayer: Father, You are the Father from which every father gets his call and name. You place opportunity in our path. You give us vision to see what others do not see. You give us friends who father into us and friends for us to father into them.

Open our eyes to follow a path of Your direction that may not be logical, but is surely beneficial.

Open our hearts to engage with those You provide and learn what we do not understand.

Thank You, Father, for being a provider of good men to invest in others.

Fathers Give Good Gifts

Luke 11:10-12 Good News Translation (GNT) For those who ask will receive, and those who seek will find, and the door will be opened to anyone who knocks.Would any of you who are fathers give your son a snake when he asks for fish?¹² Or would you give him a scorpion when he asks for an egg?

This weekend I get to enjoy the cabin and property. The lake is calm. My wife and I took a long cruise and ate on the drive-in bar and grill over at Arrowhead. The temp is good. The grass is green and looks great after cutting this morning. An acre of woods is actually fun to cut if you like to do donuts through the trees.

Years of weekends have been spent rebuilding the house floors and walls and roof and thinning trees and building native stone patios. The electric car and boat and outbuilding and hammocks and bb gun and other amenities make it a fun place for the kids to come and hang out. Some day their children's children's children will be playing here and talking excitedly about riding a go-cart or killing some harmless snake or catching a lizard or flying high on a tree swing.

One of my brothers commented how our dad had a similar vision. He bought some property and set to work. We would go pick blueberries and blackberries along the side of the road. It never reached the place where we could do anything but work. He sold it. This spot is a little bit of his heart lived out.

Fathers have goodness in their heart. They have dreams for their children. Not all the dreams happen. Not all the happenings are good. Evil can interrupt. Tragedy can take away resource. But the goodness is there to be given.

Many of the men that have fathered into me are still alive. In fact, most are still alive. One of those men is Dr. Herman Reece. He has fathered into many in different ways. For me, it has taken the shape of small group studies in his home with other couples. Over 15 years ago, my wife and I participated in a small group "Living Proof" bible study with Dr. Herman and his wife. Those weeks stirred up and confirmed and affirmed some decisions we had made and continue to make about reaching others for Christ. Herman fathered it. He taught, nurtured, and continues to speak affirmation. It is a gift that keeps giving through the lives of my children as they walk the same way in reaching others.

Thanks, Herman. A little bit of your dream lives on in me and my children.

Action: Fathering is not a one time act. For a moment, I want to speak to the men. You don't have to be a biological dad to father goodness. Seriously consider a long term action plan for taking of a dream that is inside you and sharing it with another generation.

Prayer: Father, I am blessed. My friend, Evotion, is blessed. You have set goodness and giving the heart of men to be fathers in our world through having dreams, living them, and passing them on for others to enjoy as children. Continue. Turn the hearts of fathers to the children for whom they have been called. We need it. Our nation needs it. Our families need it.

Evotion, Bring Joy To Your Fathers

Wise children make their fathers happy

All of us have had more than one "boss". A good boss can be a good father. A bad boss can be a bad father. Every boss has the opportunity to nurture and develop those in their care.

One of my bosses was an old style New York Italian. G watched over me. At times he was hard, cussed, and demanding. Always, he cared. Always, he took time to drill into me key lessons that have served me for decades.

One lesson came tough. It had been my demeanor to be poised and easy even under pressure. One afternoon, G came in my office, closed the door and confronted me. "Larson you need to know when to overreact. Don't do it when you are angry. Don't do it out of fear. Do it when you need to get attention on a key item. Be purposeful." That lesson has served me many times.

G took care of me. Though I was not eligible for bonus payout, for two years, I received significant bonuses. He made it happen because I made it happen for him in the department.

A wise employee can make a boss happy and reap good reward.

Action: Think about your work situation. Can you find a way to make a superior happen? What can you do to advance the vision?

Pray: Father, You are the Father of all Bosses. They get their authority and placement from You. Watch over us. Watch over those that watch over us. Help us to be faithful so they can be blessors of our lives.

A Father Can Separate You, Evotion.

Bob Heil was my teacher for two years. His example and investment fathered a separation into me and a commitment to work with all expressions of Christianity. He spoke over and over and over from the scripture as his reference. It became my life.

Excerpt from the book, "No Leader Before"

Leadership Locale

In the woods of Missouri, the Christian Outreach Center was started with a vision of sanctification. The place was determined and developed to be a spot where saints and sinners could gather and spend time developing relationship with God. In the early 1980’s my wife and I spent two years at the Center. Later we would take our young children for a week at a time as a family. One time, I just camped out on the grounds for a few days recovering my thoughts and dedication.

Bob Heil, a worldwide leader in the days of the Charismatic Renewal, was the visionary leader. Others came alongside, but Bob was the force and face of leadership. Bob was sanctified. I don’t mean some religious status. I mean he was a man of continual reflection and commitment to the assignment given him of God.

Along with developing a school of ministry and missions, Bob worked to develop theologically sound materials that were being used behind the Iron Curtain before it fell. He would travel with bibles and materials and commitment to believers, who had little freedom.

Other leaders gathered around Bob. That separation to do the work assigned was evident and contagious. Sanctification means separation from what is not a part to only what is a part. Sanctification is tough leadership. It works.

RESPOND WITH ACTION: Sanctify? What does it mean? It means to take away what is not holy. Take away what is not the Father's will. Take away our way and our thoughts and take on His.

PRAY WITH FAITH: Lord of Love, through the interaction of the Holy Spirit, allow sanctification in us. He is the "Holy" Spirit. He is the essence of sanctification. He is the one that will lead and guide us to know what to take away. It is through His voice that we know how to prepare ourselves for the journey even when we do not know where the journey will take us. It is through His gentle leading that we know what vestments will be necessary for the services of this day.

Do we need the vestment of joy? We put it on.

Do we need the vestment of faith? We put it on.

Do we need the vestment of praise? We put it on.

Do we need the vestment of righteousness? We put it on.

Do we need the vestment of the Christ? We put Him on.

Evotion, a Fr. that Fathered.

Another excerpt on a father in my life from the book, "Like No Other Before".

There are many that have fathered different characteristics into my life. In my early years, I was raised in a Roman Catholic congregation and private school. While I am no longer a member of that denomination, as I live and work throughout the Body of Christ and the many expressions, the planting of this priest grew me and still helps me understand and support others.

Fr. Charles

As a child, one of my most influential counselors was Fr. Charles. Folks told me he had lived a successful life in family, professional sports, and business before becoming a priest. His family had died in a tragic accident. At that point, late in life, he dedicated himself fully to others.

For some reason, he would invest in me. Somehow, he saw a spark. He gave me books on missionaries. My soul was fed with a book on saints and their miracles. Those early years in elementary school became years of encouraging greatness in the kingdom in me.

One of the special moments in my memory was on the playground. The boys were playing. Five of us that had grown together, played basketball together, and live together for years. Somewhere in the play, I placed my foot over the neck of one with whom I was wrestling. It was play. There was no anger or malice, just play.

From a distance, it must have not looked so playful. From the parsonage doorstep I heard the voice of wisdom and counsel call my name. Fear never entered my mind from Fr. Charles. He was tough, but I never doubted his love for me. His words struck deep into my heart. Admonishment for putting a friend in a position where he might be hurt even in play lodged in my soul.

Today, as a businessman and pastor and friend to the fatherless and fathers, I understand how his words and counsels of example seeped into my thoughts and plans. That priest still speaks to young men and daughters and fathers through me. Our wondersome God placed wisdom in my path. How thankful I am for the open heart to receive.

RESPOND WITH ACTION: Who in your circle has greatness accumulated? Seek their counsel this week. Find a way to tap into what is in them and use it.

PRAY WITH FAITH: This is the day You have made for us. This is the world You have skillfully carved for us. This is the destiny for which you have wonderfully made us. Mold us, Lord of Creation. Meticulously mold our makeup. Modify to fit the standards and requirements of Your determined destination for our lives.

In this world You have an ultimate design. Around us You have set wise counsel. Allow us to see. Open the eyes of our understanding. Cause us to value that in which You have consistently invested wisdom and truth and honor, Your longtime servants.

Fathers' Day is coming, Evotion.

Eleven years past, my life took a determined direction to help fathers.

Through working with the National Center for Fathering and congregations in the OKC area and CBMC and The Oklahoma Family Policy Council, we have seen thousands of families blessed.

Many years of early morning prayer vigils predate that thrust. Grasping how important fathering is to the Father impassioned that thrust.

Through speaking to minister conferences, service worker events, foster parents, men's weekend retreats, Sunday morning services, radio, and television and hosting multi-church events for fathers, parents, and fathers and daughters - fathers and families have been built. Many devotions have been targeted across the world promoting the love of fathers for their children.

Over the next two weeks, I'd like to share some anecdotes of men, who have fathered into my life. Some fathered for a season, some for a lifetime. The Father has blessed my life with greatness through the blessing of receiving from many fathers.

First, let me share an anecdote from my just published book, "No Leader Before". One lesson from the life of Hezekiah is illustrated by my dad. He taught me how to face the wall.

II Kings 20:1: In those days was Hezekiah sick unto death. And the prophet Isaiah the son of Amoz came to him, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Set thine house in order; for thou shalt die, and not live. 2: Then he turned his face to the wall, and prayed unto the LORD, saying, 3: I beseech thee, O LORD, remember now how I have walked before thee in truth and with a perfect heart, and have done that which is good in thy sight. And Hezekiah wept sore. 4: And it came to pass, afore Isaiah was gone out into the middle court, that the word of the LORD came to him, saying, 5: Turn again, and tell Hezekiah the captain of my people, Thus saith the LORD, the God of David thy father, I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears: behold, I will heal thee: on the third day thou shalt go up unto the house of the LORD. 6: And I will add unto thy days fifteen years; and I will deliver thee and this city out of the hand of the king of Assyria; and I will defend this city for mine own sake, and for my servant David's sake.

Tenacity

Testing times tell the tale of tenacity or terror. Hezekiah chose tenacity. Hezekiah again appealed to God's anointed for prayer and counsel. Hezekiah again trusted in God. Hezekiah turned his face to the wall.

No Distractions

When we face the wall, there are no distractions.

When we face the wall, we allow nothing else to influence our thoughts and prayers. When we face the wall, nothing matters but our relationship to God.

When we face the wall, we have decided to trust God and God alone.

When we face the wall, we lay down our ways and imaginations and ideas and thoughts and give God room to do whatever.

When we face the wall, we allow God to set the course.

When we face the wall we close all the doors of our ideas and present an open heart and mind in which He can work.

When we face the wall, we give all the options of who, what, where, when, and how to God's preference and choice.

My dad taught me to face the wall. Over life, he reached top certifications as a financial examiner and a public accountant without a college degree. Today, you can only take the test after you have a degree. He beat the odds. I am confident there were many nights of frustrated facing of walls that wanted to stop him. He faced the wall with determination.

During WWII, he was placed in charge of interrogating German prisoners. He had no knowledge of the German language. Given a French/German dictionary, he took what he knew of Spanish, applied it to the French and began conversing with the German soldiers. Over time, he became an effective interrogator. He faced the wall with determination.

There were plenty of times we gave him opportunity to face the wall with our problems. Each of my brothers and my sister have had events that would test the courage of any father. He stood ground, supported, faced the wall alongside, and saw us through.

RESPOND WITH ACTION: Ready to face the wall? Ready to quit trying to make it happen your way? Ready to all God all the options of space and time? Face the wall. Give Him the challenge.

PRAY WITH FAITH: Lord of Life, Father of Love, God of my Salvation, we face the wall. You know our frame. You know our circumstance. You know our heart. We face the wall.

God, we lay down our might. God, we lay down our ideas. God, we lay down our preferences and right.

God, we face the wall. God, we open the ears of our heart to hear. Speak what we do not know. Our knowledge is too limited. Shout what we cannot imagine. Our creativity is stunted. We face the wall.

The Irregular Daily Dose

Psalm 46 Continued - Hope in God.

Psalm 46:There is a river that brings joy to the city of God, to the sacred house of the Most High.

There is a fountain. There is a river. There is a spring.

Living waters.

Wells of salvation.

They bring joy.

They bring joy to the city of God, the gathering place of His people, and the location to which we come.

Psalm 127:1 If the Lord does not build the house, the work of the builders is useless; if the Lord does not protect the city, it does no good for the sentries to stand guard.

Isaiah 45:5 God's glory will cover and protect the whole city.

Hebrews 11:16 Instead, it was a better country they longed for, the heavenly country. And so God is not ashamed for them to call him their God, because he has prepared a city for them.

Revelation 22:17 And the Spirit and the bride say, "Come." And let him that heareth say, "Come." And let him that is athirst come; and whosoever will, let him take the Water of Life freely.

This psalm of joy brings us to the water of the Holy Spirit as the source of joy and life. He is continually flowing in the life of every believer. He is the source of joy springing inside of our hearts. He is in the City of Believers, the City of God, bringing us to the Eternal City.

A Mighty Fortress is God for Evotion

Psalm 46

God is our shelter and strength,
      always ready to help in times of trouble.
² So we will not be afraid, even if the earth is shaken
      and mountains fall into the ocean depths;
³ even if the seas roar and rage,
      and the hills are shaken by the violence.

While updating "Like None Before", a devotional book study of Hezekiah's leadership, the present application of ancient words stirred me.

This psalm was written after an army of millions stood at the door of the city and were turned back. It is one of the greatest miracles of deliverance.

Martin Luther used it as inspiration for "A Mighty Fortress".

Though the tornadoes crash and waters rise, He is God.

Though the politics confuse and decisions consternate, He is God.

Though life rejects my way and people pursue pain, He is God.

Though economies rattle and companies crumble, He is God.

He is God, Evotion.

He is God in the crashing.

He is God in the rising.

He is God in the confusion.

He is God in the consternation.

He is God in the rejection.

He is God in the pain.

He is God in the rattle.

He is God in the crumble.

He is God.

He is Faithful.

He is Ever Present.

He is Ever Good.

He is Ever Forgiving.

He is Ever Powerful.

He is Ever Knowing.

He is on the side of Evotion.

Among Us

Life gives up great truths as we embrace great truths. Jesus is here. Jesus is among the living. Jesus rose from the dead, ascended into heaven, and intercedes for us at the right hand of the Father. Now.

Parallel Worlds

Heaven and earth are intertwined. The will of the Father is to be expressed on earth. The Spirit of Christ lives inside of the believer to express the mind of Christ and power of God.

Engage

Jesus engages people. Jesus goes where people live. When His Spirit lives in us, we think and act the same way. Jesus delivers us into power for living so He can deliver us into the issues of others. We don't escape, we engage with Him.

Let's Pray

Father, I am looking for today's engagement. Somewhere in this day is a truth I need to grasp. Somewhere in this day is a person I need to engage. Somewhere in this day is a living of expression of Christ in me, the hope of glory, waiting to be let out so others can see You through me.

Pour into me a spirit of engagement. Assist me to see that I have been delivered into power in order to be delivered into issues. This world groans for the day when the delivered permeate society and there is no safe place for issues to hide from Your love.

It is better to trust in the Lord than to live in disenchantment. When He enchants, our life is vibrant.

It is better to trust in the Lord than to live disheartened. When He strengthens our heart, there is no fear.

It is better to trust in the Lord than to live disillusioned. When He gives vision, our lives are changed and our future is secure.

It is better to trust in the Lord, Evotion. Always and at all times in all challenges.

The Blessing of Self Control

The pressures of life demand a response.

A friend once said to me, "Every time you face information, you must respond."

Another friend once counseled me, "You can either respond or react. Choose."

Yet another friend advised me, "You have 20 seconds to decide how you will respond to news."

These three wisdoms, Evotion, were delivered over a 20 year period in different settings.

My greatest friend, the Creator, advises me to seek wise counsel and make plans before going out to do great exploits. He also consoles me that the most circumspect will fall seven times, get back up, and be restored, if they let Him be the one in whom they put their trust.

Respond or react. Choose.

When we respond to medicine, we improve.

When we react to medicine, life is not good.

We can respond or react by choice to most situations.

Response breathes life.

Reaction breathes death.

Isaiah 9:6
..... And he will be our ruler. He will be called, Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.

In Christ, I have access to the self-controlled ability to respond and not react. Sometimes I use it. Sometimes I don't. The results usually speak quite quickly as to which I chose.

Let's Pray

Father, Your Holy Spirit offers Himself as a governor of our thoughts and heart and action. You give us the ability to "put on" Jesus as if He were a suit of clothes covering our humanity and frailty with an armor of protection. Help us to follow the wisdom of Your Holy Spirit and take on the counsel, the peace, the wisdom, the mercy, the truth, and the strength of heart and mind available in Him. Surely, this day is full of opportunity to take the wrong path, react and find ourselves in a mess needing cleanup. The same opportunity under self-controlled response can become a blessing to others and advance our cause and create life. Touch me. Touch my friend, Evotion, at those precious moments with strength of heart, stability of mind, and quickness of life-giving spirit to respond.

Prayer brings God's expression of full salvation (creation acting according to best design and intent with God connected) of soma (body), soul, spirit, and society (relationships) into our individual and corporate lives. This 5S1F formula helps me focus. Salvation = (Soma + Soul + Spirit + Society) x Father

Help us pray with wisdom for the Father to intersect with His salvation across all the sectors of your life.

Follow Me...Matthew 9: 9 As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector’s booth. "Follow me," he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him.

Follow Me.

How absurd to have someone walk up and simply say, "Follow me."

Yet, that is many times how leaders act. They just walk in and make a demand on followers.

Tests of loyalty are like that. A challenge is given. No instructions. Just a challenge. Follow them and life will never be the same.

Some years ago, an executive walked into my office. Before this moment, we had never had as much as five minutes of conversation. Neither did we on this day.

"Phil, I have a problem. I need you to go to Austin and check it out."

"Can you tell me what the problem is?"

"No."

Life has never been the same. That trip led to many more problems and many more solutions and a completely different life.

Follow me is a directive that has an undetermined result. Will you?

Action Items: Somewhere there is a simple instruction to begin a journey with an undetermined end. It is full of adventure. Think about a simple request put in front of you. Follow.

Prayer: Father, what is it You have given as a challenge to my life? Do I have enough courage to follow? Do I have enough faith to just start down the path and see what happens? Where will it lead? Where will it go? Will you fill me with confidence in Your provision? Will You build my courage to run the race? I want to follow, Father. Help my unbelief. Help me to just obey and see the results.

PrayerMetro is just that .... prayer.

Part of prayer is action.

Action for us is about unity.

Periodically, we will announce an event. We are asked a lot.

1. It has to have a Christian focus. Make an attracting and consistent sound. Of course there may be participation by other faiths, as long as the core focus is Christian. I attend outside the walls of Christianity, but I don't announce those events.

2. It has to be one at which we feel any Christian believer would feel welcome and comfortable. Pursue the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. Though I attend many events of different natures (Conservative Christian, Pentecostal, Baptist, Roman Catholic, Orthodox, Liberal Christian, etc...) I don't promote an event is I feel some section of the kingdom would take offense. You would be surprised how separatist we can be in our approaches. That is okay when all you have is your homies. But if you want the whole expression of Christ, there has to be some dial down. Just sayin'.

3. I need to have personal knowledge of the hosts. Know those that labor among you. Surprises are for little girls' birthday parties, not public reputation.

The LORD appeared to us in the past, saying: “I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness Jeremiah 3:3

“Whether one believes in a religion or not, and whether one believes in rebirth or not, there isn't anyone who doesn't appreciate kindness and compassion.”

Kindness is not a commodity. It is a rare and exceptional gift.

Too often kindness comes to us in response to some deed. Another person shows kindness to us because we have done some act on their behalf.

What about kindness that is rooted in common humanity? That is the kindness I appreciate the most. A friend or acquaintance shows kindness just because I am human. A door is opened ahead of me. Someone lets me pass in a four way stop. I receive an encouraging word from a total stranger. Now that is kindness that affects me differently than what I have earned.

Whether I have been angered, mean, sullen, distraught or unkind, an act of kindness can move me to higher ground. Whether I have been joyful, encouraging, loyal, or thankful, an act of kindness can take me to higher ground.

Prayer: May your day and week, Evotion, be full of kindness. May an unknown stranger take notice of you and bless you with a kind word or action. Evotion, understand through life that God is totally disposed toward you with kindness.

Matthew Got It.

Matthew 9: 9 As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow me,” he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him.

There is a time that the call from Jesus on our life is undeniable. It is our journey and requirement of service to be ready and responsive at that moment. Matthew got it. He received the call from Jesus. He received the call in his heart. He received the call in his actions. Matthew got it.

How do we know we get it? Well, the story of Matthew is as much lesson as story. You get it when you get it in all three manners. Jesus calls through the voice of His Holy Spirit. You hear deep in the heart of your spirit. There is a strong compunction to move and take action. There. Got it?

For Matthew life would never follow the same pattern. That is a sign of a real call. Calls don’t leave us, we leave them.

All around in the community I am witnessing men giving up the call. They are so focused on a small portion of the original call. Now they have not seen the full fruit and are ready to retire. Where does retirement come in a call? Ask Moses and he would answer, “At death.” Ask David and Isaiah and Jeremiah and Paul and they would answer the same. When you and done with the call, you are done with life on this planet earth.

That is the type of call you should seek. It is not a call to do something. It is a call to be someone. How can you quit being someone?

Action Items: Have you listened closely enough to hear the call? One three year period I sought the call. It is simple for me. Pray-er. That is who I am. A pray-er. There are assignments along the journey of being. Who does God call you to be?

Prayer: Father, this is an amazing time. During times of stress in families and world and community, we most are pressed to listen. You have our attention. Am I living the call or avoiding it. Have I given up growing to be more of who You want me to be? Release me into the fullness of the call. I want to get like Matthew got it. I want to move forward in simplicity and obedience, guided by the core call to be.

Join us in committed prayer on Tuesday for world leadership. I am calling you to prayer. I am compelling you to prayer.

In an uncertain time where Syria, Egypt, Yemen, Bahrain, Tunisia, Libya, Iraq, Iran, Korea, Israel, Japan, the United States and other nations have such daily turmoil, leadership must rule with wisdom.

I will be personally in prayer with many legislators here in Oklahoma during the noon hour.

During the day, I plan to be in prayer for hours for leadership across the world.

This is a wonderful time to show forth the glory of God.

Faithful Son

Matthew 10:2: Now the names of the twelve apostles are these; The first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; 3: Philip, and Bartholomew; Thomas, and Matthew the publican; James the son of Alphaeus, and Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddaeus; 4: Simon the Canaanite, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him. 5: These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying, Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not: 6: But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

Knowing that Judas would betray Him, knowing that Israel would reject Him for thousands of years, and knowing that these men would weaken at important moments, Jesus committed His future works into their hands. Being faithful even when we know people will not act according to our desire is important. When you connect with Jesus, you connect with a faithful Son. He is faithful to us when we are faithless. He is faithful to His people, when they reject Him. He is faithful to all who come to Him.

Some years back, I had a staff member that looked to be nothing but problematic. His prior manager had huge and continuous problems with his work quality. Other workers did not like to work with him. He was belligerent.

Working with his immediate team leader, we came up with a plan. As we began to speak confidence to him in his abilities and his future, his work changed. After a few years, he became a stellar staff member and was promoted to an advanced standing. It all started with being faithful to him, when he wasn't faithful to us.

ACT! Pick an unlikely person today on whom you rely and speak a word of confidence in them.

PRAY! Father of my Lord, Christ, build in me this unwavering faithfulness. Help me to be faithful to those who rely on me and on whom I rely. Show me specific ways to build and encourage and show them there is trust even though they may fail at times.

Other Centric Citizenship

Let mercy and truth (justice) hang as ornaments around your neck and you will find favor with God and with men.

A pastor weeps for his people. A mother cries for the children. A legislator claims his faith should not affect his decisions. A businessman prospers with illegal workers. A child stays home from school in fear the government will steal his parents if he leaves to be educated.

This is Oklahoma City. This is the United States. This is not the turmoil of the Middle East. It is the turmoil of my neighbors. This is not last decade. This is today.

Citizens are those that live in a city. Aliens denotes others. In fact, the word alien means other. We are only aliens until we settle and become known as citizens. Citizenship comes from spending time together in a community. It comes from legal wrangling and permission and agreements.

Most nations, the United States included, form from people deciding to move from one spot to another and settle. Wars breakout. Feuds ensue. Tempers settle. Wiser minds prevail. A new citizenry develops out of the groups of others.

Our nation has struggled with allowing certain citizen rights to non-landowners, women, former slaves, and the next wave of others many times. It will never end. It is the way of things.

Struggle is good. It opens our minds to think new thoughts and discover next truths. Every one of us wants to defend what was placed in us as children as absolute. Giving that up is tough. Determining the difference between absolute truth and circumstantial truth is a painful process. Through that process we must travel.

The guiding tome of Christians is the 66 collected writings from Moses through the first century disciples of Christ. These are called "the Bible" or scripture. Bible simply mean a collection of writings. Scripture means writings. Every brand of Christianity then has an interpretive stance toward this collection of history, poetry, laws, and letters. A systematic theology fifty to a thousand times bigger than the original interprets what the writers really meant.

Two other powerhouse religions of Middle Eastern descent as Christianity use selected portions of that work along with additions. Judaism looks to the writings before Christ along with the interpretive torah and again branded views. Islam uses portions of the pre-Christ writings along with the four historical accounts of Christ and the Koran and other interpretive views.

The view of those writers who wrote on aliens and citizenship is something I would like to explore.

For Moses and the prophets before Christ, citizenship was a covenant. It involved even a physical event for the men. It was a commitment to live together under a common understanding of laws as dispensed by interpreters of God. If you commit to those laws and the God of those laws, you become a citizen. Birth was an important introduction to the citizenry, but choice was allowed. An other can become a citizen.

There was tribe and nation. Tribe was birth line only. Tribes certainly were mixed. Christ had a huge mix and was considered of the tribe of Judah of the line of the kings. Yet, his birth line included many non-tribal influences that entered by choice through marriage. Marriage is covenant enough to bring citizenship.

Those that followed Christ are the most inclusive. Writers point to choice as the prime act of citizenry into the kingdom of Christ. The Greco-Roman influence of reason points to choice and choice alone. Once conquered by Christ and submitted to Him and His ways, you are in forever. It is an irrevocable citizenship opened by sacrifice and kept open by choice. Everyone is an other, so everyone can join. Later, Christians formed cities or denominations that have specific rules and laws. So you have to go through classes and commit to that set of laws to be a citizen of that group, but you are a citizen of the larger nation by choice first.

Our laws in the US are similar to all of these structures. Birth counts. Marriage counts. Classes count. Choice counts. We have eliminated gender and racial origin. Those were dark days. At one point, we disallowed the very natives of the land from citizenship. We have grown as a people in our short duration as a nation.

Now we struggle again.

For decades, we make it easy to come and visit and add to the economy for our neighbors to the south. Our construction and farming and service industries prosper with other workers. We offer medical benefits, education, and citizenship for children. Our open heart continues to cry out for the wanderers looking for a place to call home. It is a mutually beneficial relationship.

One law says you have to have papers. Many laws and most practices of the community say you just need a strong back, a serving smile, presence, and persistence. Our struggle today is between status quo law and book law. They conflict. Many practices reward the efforts that the book prevents.

So I call for choice. I am not a politician, so I do not propose the laws. I am a prayer and I do propose that path of eternal wisdom for all.

Repentance of the citizens for offering a beneficial situation of healthcare, education, employment, livelihood, and community that was conflicting with the book law. As citizens we covenant with the law. We have been unfaithful and should receive the justice of fines and jail, but we plead for mercy.

Repentance of the others who freely took advantage of the situation knowing it was illegal. They have been unfaithful to the standards and community they so much want to enjoy and join. They have been unfaithful and should receive the justice of fines and deportation, but we plead for mercy.

Mercy for all.

God give us mercy. None of us are without guilt under the law. All of us have benefited from our disobedience.

Show us a way of mercy that will bring us back to justice. Restore each of us to a place of acceptable citizenship according to mercy. Justice would surely condemn us all.

Help us to establish just laws that are enforceable and consistent with the heart of the people. Surely the laws we have are unjust in our own hearts. Let us not create more unjust laws for which we have no heart. Our blood guiltiness should not cause us to dig deeper holes from which we cannot retreat. Our lack of repentance should certainly not cause evil to prevail.

Purge us of our sin and set us on a straight course. Surely, we are weak and human and will sin again. Today we are before You pleading for mercy and truth to come forward and give us wisdom.

Father, grant peace to the hearts that are full of fear. You hear the cry of the widow, the single mom, the child, and the alien. Blood is on our hands. We are guilty and thy cry out for Your justice and mercy. As always, You hear them. Let us find a cup of cold water and give it. Touch their hearts. Sooth their minds. Grant us peace.

Matthew 9:35: And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people.

One characteristic of Jesus is His all inclusiveness. He went about "all" the cities and villages. Size of village or population of city did not deter Him. Our propensity is to go to the "big". Jesus is not an entertainer looking for a fee or a crowd. His consideration is for the individual, who might be found in the remotest village in the poorest section of town. The search of His soul is for one life that will respond and receive full life in Him, and He will go wherever it takes to see that happen.

A quiet meeting in our city joins an Orthodox minister of Palestinian birth and heritage, a Methodist businessman, an Assembly of God businessman, a Christian journalist, a Christian filmmaker, an Islamic Imam of Jordanian heritage, an architect of Syrian heritage, and me, an all American mutt of Italian, Swedish, English, German, Creek origin, a businessman/pastor. Quite a mix. Not everything is known about the participants by the others. A certain awe and respect permeates the room. One thing is certain. Each owns in their faith and personal life a belief and experience of Jesus. He is here for all of us. He looks for each of us to respond to Him.

ACT! To whom can you reach out with love today that seems remote?

PRAY! Holy Father of Comfort and Love, I admit I look for response out of my world first before giving. Jesus gives when there is no response. Let me be like Him. Let me give to the areas where there is the least opportunity for them to give back. Expand my vision to reach out and love to the remotest with no consideration of what can be given back or how much.
